                           Welcome back for the 2017-2018 school year!

 

Summersill Elementary is proud to be a Mindful School. We are a themed elementary school that is based on Habits of Mind. There are sixteen habits that are necessary to become productive, successful thinkers and problem solvers. We are focusing on all 16 of those habits during the 2017-2018 school year.  All sixteen habits will be incorporated into the daily routines of our students and staff.

Daily Attendance

Arrival Time           8:00-8:25 a.m.

Tardy Bell                       8:25 a.m.

Departure Times     3:05-3:20 p.m.

                

3:05 p.m. for car riders, parent pick-up in front of café, daycare vans, and Boys and Girls Club.

 

3:20 p.m. Bus Riders

 

Students must attend 3 ½ hours of the school day to be counted present. If your child arrives after 8:25 a.m., you must come into the office and sign the student sign-in log for your child to go to class.  

Students checking out before 11:45 a.m. are considered absent. Students leaving after 11:45 are recorded as an early checkout on their report card. Late entries & early checkouts affect perfect attendance.

 

PTO News

Welcome to the 2017-2018 School Year! Our first PTO meeting on September 11th went great. We discussed a lot of great upcoming activities. We were so excited to see all the new faces. The next PTO meeting will be on October 16 from 6:30 – 7:30 pm in the cafeteria. It is pushed back a week due to no school on the 9th.

The fall fundraiser will kick off on October 2 and run through October 16. The fundraiser is through Charleston Wrap. Also, sometime soon we will be sending home information about our newly designed Spirit t-shirts and sweat shirts.

 

We hope to see you at our next PTO meeting.

 

Afternoon Transportation

Changes CAN NOT be made

by telephone!

All changes must be in writing

prior to 1:00 p.m.!!!

 

Please send a note to inform your child’s teacher as to where your child should go if a change is needed for a particular day.

Bus Notes must contain: bus #, address of drop off, parent signature & date.

 

 

SAFETY REMINDERS:

Smoking is not allowed on school grounds! Policy # 4320

 Please refrain from speeding on campus & adhere to the directions of school personnel.

 

No Parking or Drop Off’s Behind Café – This if for Café staff only

 

All visitors/parents (Pre-K – 5th) must sign in at the office to receive a visitors pass…your ID is REQUIRED!

 

ID is REQUIRED of everyone to check a student out of school!

 

Quality Instructional Time

Our goal is to protect instructional time for our students and avoid classroom interruptions. Parents are not allowed to the classroom during instructional time unless there is a scheduled parent conference. Parents can drop off items for students at the office and they will be delivered to the classroom. Office staff are NOT permitted to “call down” to the classroom during instructional time unless for a check out. Messages will be relayed to teachers during their break or lunch times. Thank you for your continued support.

 

Early Release Info:

Early Release for students is a Professional Development Day for school staff.     Our release time is 12:05 pm for walkers & car riders and 12:20 pm for bus riders on these early release days.

Boys & Girls Club is not

held on these days!

Be sure to make necessary arrangements in advance.

Your Future’s Key So Be Drug Free

Monday 23rd: Wear Red Day!- Wear as much as red as you can to show you're drug free! Students will sign a pledge during lunch.

Tuesday 24th: Team Up Against Drugs!- Wear your favorite sports team t-shirt or jersey!

Wednesday 25th: Drugs and I Don’t Mix! - wear mismatched socks and tennis shoes

Thursday 26th: Summersill Stands Together Against Drugs!- wear purple and gold to show your school spirit

Friday 27th: We have the Power To Be Drug Free!-- dress as your favorite Super Hero (**no masks or weapons!)

Notes from the Nurse…..          

It’s Flu season! Flu season usually peaks in January but it is a good idea to get vaccinated early. Children can be vaccinated against the flu at their local doctor’s office or the Health Department.

CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older as the first and most important step in protecting

against this serious disease. While there are many different flu viruses, the flu vaccine is designed to protect against the three main flu strains (CDC, 2013). Last year's season saw the highest hospitalization rates. A contagious respiratory illness, the influenza causes a range of common symptoms, including fever, sore throat, fatigue and, in some cases, vomiting and diarrhea, according to the CDC. Consult your child’s doctor and remember, wash your hands!

Musical Notes

 

October’s Composer of the Month is

Johann Sebastian Bach

 

Each moth in Music class will we feature a famous composer and listen to some of their most famous pieces of music! Bach’s most famous piece was “Toccata and Fugue in D minor”.

 

PARENTS – New Delayed Bus Notification System

OCS makes every effort to get our students picked up and home in a timely, efficient manner. As a school system, we, like most other school districts throughout southeastern North Carolina, are experiencing an extreme shortage of school bus drivers and substitute drivers. This often causes us to have to double up routes or have students wait until another bus becomes available to go back and pick them up, causing delays and inconvenience.

Hearing parent concerns, OCS created a new service for our parents to check for delays/changes. We created a link on the main district’s website to provide up-to-date information on bus route delays and/or changes. This information is categorized by district and will be maintained by our bus coordinators.
